For this week’s “Spotlight on…” we chat to Andrew Jones, the lead singer of up and coming UK Country band Acoustic Journey
Who inspired you to go into the world of music?
I suppose I’ve always been in to music, my dad used to carry me around as a baby with Dire Straits and Pink Floyd as company, he really raised me on 70’s and 80’s rock so having those kind of musicians to look up to clearly inspired me to grab a guitar and learn but only when I was a little older.
What made you choose Country music?
Back in 2004 I spent the first few years of my working career alongside the US Air Force, that was really where I encountered Country Music for the first time. The music is so expressive and emotional in some cases and others are feel good, party tunes. Ben played with Rachael Warwick which is where he was shown some different country artists like Rascal Flatts and Chris Cagle.
When we started playing together I suppose the genre just fit my style of singing and Ben’s style of song writing. Sammons has recently become a Country music fan in no small part due to joining us but he now loves the hard hitting lyrics and harmonies found in some great country tracks.
At what age did you want to become a singer?
I sang in the school choir as a soloist from around the age of 8. My school was always entered in to Rotary Club competitions which we won 3 years in a row until I moved on to Secondary school. Then I stopped singing and started playing rugby!
What is on your iPod’s most played list?
For me it would have to be Florida Georgia Line, Kip Moore, Tyler Farr and more lately John and Jacob, Darius Rucker and Dierks Bentley
What was the first record you ever bought?
Embarrassingly enough the first album I ever bought was on cassette and it was Spice by The Spice Girls!
And the last?
The latest album I’ve purchased is First Kiss by Kid Rock, talk about a difference!!
If you could play any instrument, what would it be?
I would love to be more competent on the piano however I would love to pick up the saxophone!!!
What’s the one thing you can’t live without?
Music most probably! I couldn’t imagine life without it!
Do you prefer “Classic” Country or “New” Country?
To be honest I like “New” country more but only because it relates to me in a different way to “Classic” country. But without the “Classic” there would be no “New” I suppose.
Do you have any superstitions or routines that you do before you perform?
A pretty boring bunch really, no strange routines! Maybe a quick fist bump before we kick off.
If you could work with anybody, who would you choose to collaborate with and why?
Working with any great songwriters would be an absolute privilege but I would honestly love to work with Kip Moore. Probably one of my favourite artists at the moment.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
To be honest I’d love to still be getting out and playing music with Ben and Sammons. It just seems to work for us. Whether it be on bigger stages or the awesome local pubs and festivals we play I just want to still be enjoying it in 10 years time.
What do you do to “relax”?
The gym is always a good stress reliever and I do have a bit of an addiction to Video Games!
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Italy is an awesome place to visit, great food and great people! The USA was also a great trip, the people in most of the American Mid West are so friendly.
